Cell Phone Policy
Student Cell Phone Policy
At Millennium High School, we care deeply about our students' learning and success. To help them focus better, we have a policy where students check in their cell phones at the start of the school day. They will get their phones back at the end of the school day. Here’s why this policy is important:
Why We Do This
-
Better Focus and Learning:
- Studies show that students without cell phones in the classroom can concentrate better and participate more actively in lessons. This leads to higher grades and better understanding of the material.
-
Less Distraction:
- Cell phones can be very distracting. They can take students' attention away from their teachers and classmates. Without phones, students can engage more in class discussions and activities.
-
Improved Social Skills:
- When students are not on their phones, they interact more with each other. This helps them build friendships and improve their communication skills, which are important for their future.
Research Supporting Our Policy
- A study by the London School of Economics found that students in schools with phone bans performed better in tests, especially lower-achieving students. Removing phones increased test scores by an average of 6.41% for 16-year-olds.
- Research from the University of Chicago showed that having a phone nearby, even if it’s off, can reduce cognitive capacity. This means that just having a phone around can make it harder for students to think clearly and solve problems.
How the Policy Works
- Check-In: Students will hand in their cell phones, smartwatch, IPAD, and/or ear pods once they enter the school. Each electronic device is secured and held until the end of school.
- Secure Storage: Phones will be securely stored and monitored.
- Check-Out: At the end of the school day, students will collect their phones and other electronic devices.
We believe that this policy will help students succeed in school and beyond. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
